Today Elisabeth turned ninety-eight
In her wheelchair she sits up strong and straight
All of her loved ones have long since gone
But Lizzy is still hanging on
Her family was the heart of her life
She loved being a minister's wife
Now her world is lonely and small
She can only do three things at all
I can read I can sing & I can pray
That's all I've got left but that's okay
So don't go throwing my life away
I can read I can sing & I can pray
She lives in a room with a hospital bed
The nurses make sure she's clothed and fed
Once in a while her Grandson shows
To visit and bring her a rose
Her eyes are still as blue as the sky
Except on the days she can't help but cry
She says those days are surprisingly few
Cause when she's sad she knows what to do
I can read I can sing & I can pray
That's all I've got left but that's okay
So don't go throwing my life away
I can read I can sing & I can pray
My life is full and much too fast
I dwell on days that are already past
I live in fear of what might be
And miss the moment in front of me
Elisabeth opened my eyes today
Life is constantly slipping away
So rather than wait till the end of the ride
While time is still on my side
I can read I can sing & I can pray
I might forget but that's okay
I won’t be throwing my life away
I can read I can sing & I can pray
I can read I can sing & I can pray
When that's all I've got left it'll be okay
Cause I won't be throwing my life away
I can read I can sing & I can pray
