News from the musical world of Christine Albert and Chris Gage
April 2012

Coming to Crockett this weekend - Camp Street Cafe on Friday, April 6!

Hey and howdy, friends and neighbors, salutations from the MoonHouse in beautiful Austin, Texas,

Once again, it's newsletter time.  This will be a busy month, with Christine making a trip to LA for meetings as well as traveling to Washington, DC to take part in Grammys on the Hill - joining hundreds of music professionals from across the country as they visit with legislators to advance policies that improve the environment for music and its makers. Chris will be juggling four different recording projects at MoonHouse Studio and we have a healthy gig schedule with shows at some of our favorite venues - Camp Street Cafe (Crockett), Central Market (Austin) and Anderson Fair (Houston).  And of course our annual Easter Sunrise Service on Rolke Ranch in Franklin, Texas.  This year Jimmy Ruggiere will join us on harmonica for a soulful and sacred Easter experience.

The plans for "Albert and Gage's Alpine Adventure Tour" are shaping up!  Fans are invited to join us for the Swiss portion of our October European tour.  This ten day trip (October 13-23 - including the travel days to and from Zurich), will feature plenty of Albert and Gage shows throughout Switzerland, sightseeing with an emphasis on a non-touristy experience, hanging out with locals, eating great food, touring a winery, visiting a watchmaking museum, etc. We need commitments by May 18 in order to confirm that the trip has enough folks to go on.  Deposits will not be due until it's all set.  Details can be found here.

Chris' photo essay this month is a series of backstage shots.  A festival in Montana, a train on the east coast, and the Flatlanders were captured in San Francisco at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival.

As always, thanks for the support and Happy Spring to you,
Chris and Christine

A note from Christine:
"Come with an attitude of gratitude" is what the sign by the cross says atop the highest hill on Rolke Ranch.  Every year we are invited to take part in an Easter Sunrise Service that the Rolke family has hosted for over 25 years.  The tradition began with Lisa's dad and and his desire to share their piece of heaven on earth just outside Franklin, Texas on Highway 79.  Ranchers and locals come from miles around and gather on bales of hay to greet the sunrise and embrace the possibility of new life.  Young adults in their twenties have spent every Easter going to "church" at the ranch.
Lisa's dad is gone now and her mother's health is failing, but she and her brother Paul are keeping the tradition alive.  The older I get the more I appreciate those annual rituals that help us to not only mark time, but stop and reflect on what the preceding days have brought us.  This year, for The Rolkes, The Alberts & The Gages there has been sorrow and loss.  Chris and I have chosen Tom Peterson's "Over on the Other Side" and Amos Lee's "Cup of Sorrow" to sing on Easter Morning.

And we'll also sing the classic "In the Garden" because new life is blossoming all around us right now - as evidenced by our beautiful 9 month old grandson Brody.  It hasn't all been sorrow and loss, that's for sure, and that's the wonder of it all.

    Love, Christine

"Will the ship roll and toss
  Will it ferry me across
Jordan River is chilly, deep and wide
Will you hear my heart's prayer
Will you rush to greet me there
  Will we meet
  Over on the other side".
    Tom Peterson

  And a blurb from Chris:
It's spring again.  I played with Jerry Jeff last night at Gruene Hall which is basically a big screened in dance hall and it was already feeling like a sweaty summer show.  You can see a picture of it here if you've never experienced Gruene Hall.  John Travolta's dance scene from the movie "Michael" was filmed there, and several of our friends were in the movie band.  (Click here to watch).
I talk about food a lot, and I was thinking back the other day about the food people I've met over the years.  I met Colonel Sanders and Orville Redenbacher both on the set of Hee Haw in the 1980
's.  Stubb (Christopher B. Stubblefield, famous Texas bbq king) came backstage and shook my hand once when Jimmie Dale Gilmore and I opened a show for Johnny Cash.  Earl Campbell (famous football player and sausage magnate) used to jump up on stage at Donn's Depot and sing Merle Haggard songs with us.  And...the biggest deal for me...was when I got to perform "Big Bad John" with Jimmy Dean himself at a golf tournament in the 80's.  I don't imagine most young folks even know that long before his sausage business Jimmy was a TV personality and made hit records.  The flip side of "Big Bad John", by the way, was "I Won't Go Huntin' With You, Jake (but I'll Go Chasin' Women").
See you at the gig.  Come to Switzerland with us!

"I want to drink from your cup of sorrow,
I want to bathe in your holy blood.
I want to sleep with the promise of tomorrow,
I know tomorrow may never come."
    Amos Lee

We still have this couch.  Fast motion silliness as Marley Forman and I bring in a new couch to the music of the Nash Hernandez Orchestra.

Jerry Jeff Walker - Down in Belize
