March, 2011
Greetings from the MoonHouse in lovely south
Austin, Texas
|
Hey and a "Spring is Coming" howdy to all
our friends, fans, family and neighbors.
This month we return to
Uncle Calvin’s, the esteemed listening concert series in
Dallas. We’ll play a new house concert series in the
Houston area, relish performing at The Bugle Boy in La
Grange and celebrate SXSW with a slew of great singer/songwriters
from around the country at Artz in Austin. Our usual Donn’s and
Artz residencies, some Jerry Jeff gigs and singing French songs for
a Foreign Language Teacher’s conference round out the month.
Somewhere in there we’ll weed the garden and plant some seeds,
literally and figuratively. We added
several new names to our e-News list this month - those
of you that had ordered one of our MoonHouse Records CDs
online at some point (could have been music by Abi
Tapia, Cowboy Johnson, Red Willow Band, Albert and Gage,
etc.)
We publish monthly, and if you want off the list you'll
find an easy "unsubscribe" button at the bottom that
you're free to click on. We hope you'll stay with
us and help spread the word about our crazy little music
career.
Songwriter Tom Peterson, writer of all
the fabulous songs featured on our "Dakota Lullaby" CD,
will be doing a rare online performance/interview this
Friday, March 4th at 1 PM (CT) in Sioux Falls, SD.
Hosted by SF Argus Leader Arts and Entertainment
Reporter, Jay Kirschenmann, the event will be streaming
live at
www.argusleader.com/linklive. You can even
type in comments and questions.
If you missed it...Chris' "Monday Night at Donn's Depot" got
a very nice review in the Austin American Statesman
recently.

Albert and Gage have a track featured on "The Best of
Times", the songs of Sara Hickman. Our track is called "Take
Me With You", a song Sara wrote for one grandparent watching the
other slip towards the great beyond.
Sales of this compilation of Sara's songs covered
by 38 renowned Texas artists will go to benefit Theatre Action
Project (TAP), which brings art, music and theatre to kids in
Central Texas schools. Artists include Willie Nelson, Marcia
Ball, Shawn Colvin, Ruthie Foster, Jimmy La Fave, Edie Brickell & New
Bohemians, Brave Combo, Robert Earl Keen... and dozens more!

The TCA provides grants to arts presenters, schools,
libraries, theaters and other non-profits throughout
Texas to help with the cost of bringing in artists from
the roster. |
A reminder that
Christine Albert's French Show has been approved
for inclusion on the new
Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) Texas Touring Roster
for the Sept 2010 - August 2012 season. So, if you know of a
school, non-profit arts organization (grants are not
available for fundraising events), etc that would like to host Ms.
Albert's French Show, please keep this in mind.
The next deadline for Arts Respond Performance Support Grants
is May 1, 2011 for performances June 15 - August 31,
2011. (Insider tip - you can also apply
for funding for an A&G show through Christine's account,
since Christine is the Albert in Albert and Gage!)
Christine and Professor Jacki Thomas of Texas A&M -
Kingsville are developing listening comprehension
exercises as a companion to the Texafrance music -
perfect for the classroom or for individuals learning
French on their own. More soon about "Texafrance -
Ecoutez!"

A note
from Christine:
As I write this I am at LAX waiting for a plane to
Austin; I made a quick trip to Santa Monica for a one day meeting
and will return at the end of the month. My time as a Trustee
with The Recording Academy is winding down and I will miss the
camaraderie and challenge of the work, but look forward to devoting
more brain cells to my music. I spend more time talking about music
than actually making music these days. In the words of Steve Martin
“talking about music is like dancing about architecture.”
I did have a great time with my son Troupe at The
Grammys this year. Yes, we sat at a table next to Adam Lambert and
Sarah Silverman at a Beverly Hills dinner, but the highlight had to
be watching Julie Andrews graciously accept a Lifetime Achievement
Award in a beautiful, historic theater the evening before the big
show. “America’s Beloved Gospel Singer,” George Beverly Shea, was
also there to accept his award. At 102 his mind was clear as a
bell; he sang a few bars, told a few jokes and was pretty darned
inspiring. Just when I think I’ve had a long career, I see someone
like that who puts me to shame and challenges me to rethink age.
May you march forth with gusto this month.
Love,
Christine |

And
a blurb from Chris:
Found a couple days to relax and
regroup this week. Well, just today. And I'm putting out
a newsletter...it's relaxing in its own way.
Got the spring garden planted for the most part.
I've only got so much space available, and the lettuce and onions
are still feeding us so I can't just yank them out and plant
tomatoes and peppers so Christine gave up some space usually
reserved for flowers (that you can't eat!) and let me sneak in a few
vegetables.
Our century plant that bloomed last year is kind of a
20 foot dead monolith at this point, with the bottom of it a
withered mushy mass where the incredible spiny arms used to be.
It's okay, we're grieving but this will give us a chance to rethink
the backyard, clear out some more of the rampant bamboo forest and
get some ideas for flagstone patios, fire pits, zen gardens, etc.
Come on, Christine...how about horseshoes??
We've got a beautiful old cedar tree that was falling
over from a wet season, and with the help of Scott George we just
propped it up with a piece of itself. Who knows how long it
will last, but we've cut off enough limbs that it's not so heavy
anymore.
Hey, I'll go shoot some photos of this and post them to
the garden page on
our website. Have a look at springtime in Texas.
See you at the gig (I hope).
