News from the musical world of Christine Albert and Chris Gage
November 2012

Coming up this week!!!  Guero's Wednesday (Halloween), Uncle Calvin's Friday and Winnsboro Saturday

Hey and howdy, friends and neighbors, salutations from the MoonHouse in beautiful Austin, Texas.

This evening (Halloween) we're performing at Guero's in Austin, TX (1412 South Congress Ave. Austin, TX 78704) - 6-8PM
KDRP's "Texas Radio Live" airing live on KDRP - also featuring Bill Oliver   www.kdrplive.org - streaming live worldwide!

The inaugural "Albert and Gage Alpine Adventure" was quite a success.  The 12 fans who came along are now bonafide friends and were an amazingly easygoing group.  That's a lot of personalities to throw together 16 hours a day but we can't imagine a better combination of folks to embark on this journey with.  We all had experiences far beyond our expectations, thanks to our host Martin Meier.  When we tour in Europe, we usually focus on getting to the next gig and catching up on rest as much as possible.

This time, Martin created opportunities for the Adventurers that we were not going to miss out on, so instead of sleeping late we found ourselves taking a gondola and walking to an Alpine lake, climbing the clock tower in Berne, eating fondue in Gruyere, learning about the origins of watch making in La Loche.  Christine's mother and two sisters were visiting their cousins in Switzerland that week, so there were plenty of tears from the Albert, Keller and Sutter girls at the gig they were able to attend and a spirited family dinner on our night off.  It was a trip we won't forget.  Special thanks to David Carroll - bass player extraordinaire and soul brother #1 - for embracing the adventure and the Adventurers.

"L to R - Martin, Chris, Christine, David, Wendy, Ken, Paula, Gary, Mollie, Boozer, Carol, Bonnie, Joy, Steve, Amy and Shari"

Speaking of which, David and his lovely fiancée Kerry Simpson will be married the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 23rd and we will celebrate their union at Donn's on Saturday, November 24th!  Let the holidays begin.

We have some great shows around the state this month, a cool house concert here in Austin and Christine begins her new Monday evening residency with Sarah Elizabeth Campbell at El Mercado.  She'll also make a couple of trips to LA and Chris will head to Vegas to toast his step-mother's 80th birthday and work like crazy in the studio. Back at it.

Thank you to everyone who came to see us at our shows in Germany and Switzerland, to all the promoters, Christine's family, the Alpine Adventurers, Karl-Heinz Siber, and an über danke to Martin Meier!

Hey, come out and watch us play sometime,
Chris and Christine

We are pleased  to announce that Christine Albert and Sarah Elizabeth Campbell are teaming up to create a new Monday early evening tradition.  El Mercado on South 1st Street in South Austin, Texas will host "Mystery Monday" every week from 7:30-9:30 PM.

Christine Elisabeth Albert  and Sarah Elizabeth Campbell will be joined by David Carroll on upright bass and a special, surprise guest instrumentalist each week for a  spontaneous, every changing, musical menu.  These two exceptional vocalists will interpret songs from Uncle Walt's Band, Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Karla Bonoff, Iris Dement, Eliza Gilkyson, Edith Piaf, The Everly Brothers and more - in addition to fresh takes on longtime favorite originals.

El Mercado has a newly revamped menu, is expanding their stage and remodeling their space to create a truly unique and great sounding music room.  With a full bar, an outdoor patio with access to the music, plenty of space and a warm welcome from Tony, Nate and the entire El Mercado crew, this promises to continue the tradition nurtured by Artz Ribhouse for so many years.  Start your Monday at El Mercado with Christine and Sarah Elizabeth and continue on to Donn's to see Chris Gage. The kick off is Monday, November 5th.

Swan Songs is honored that Eliza Gilkyson has agreed to be the featured performer at our annual fundraiser on Tuesday, December 4.  Last year's event with Jerry Jeff was a huge success, and tickets are selling fast for another night that promises to be just as stellar.

To learn about opportunities to support Swan Songs and this event as a silent auction donor or event sponsor, please contact craig.calvert@swansongs.org.

Eliza Gilkyson is a politically minded, poetically gifted singer-songwriter who has become one of the most respected musicians in Folk and Americana music circles. The daughter of songwriter Terry Gilkyson, whose songs were recorded by artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, the White Stripes, and Dean Martin, Eliza was headed for a career in music at an early age.

She has appeared on NPR, Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, Etown, Sirius/XM, Air America Radio and has toured with Richard Thompson, Patty Griffin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. She has been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame, received a Grammy nomination for her 2006 CD "Paradise Hotel", and is an ongoing winner of the Austin Chronicle's various music awards, as well as the Folk Alliance Best Artist, Best Songwriter and Record of the Year.

MoonHouse Records  Visit the MoonHouse Records website for the latest CDs by Albert and Gage, Christine Albert (including the entire "Texafrance" series), Red Willow Band CDs and DVDs,  Michael Austin, Abi Tapia and some old dusty gems.  Hey there's even t-shirts.
MoonHouse Studio News  We just finished classy demos for opera singer Benjamin Watts, final mixes for Sarah Smith, are working on an EP by Carrington McDuffie, a new jingle for ABC Home and Commercial Services, some classy re-records of material from the Paramount Pictures music catalog, some Chan Chandler musical archiving, and Jerry Jeff came in to lay down a couple new songs he's writing.  Albert and Gage are working on new material, but no recording has been done....yet.
Swan Songs fulfills musical wishes at the end of life by organizing private concerts for individuals with a terminal illness. At their request, a favorite style of music or musician is brought directly to the home or facility. The concert allows patient, family and friends to focus beyond the illness and come together through the medium of music.

Save the date for "An Evening With Eliza"  benefiting Swan Songs on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at The Gibson Showroom in Austin, Texas.  Eliza Gilkyson has fulfilled two very special musical last wishes via Swan Songs and we are grateful for her support and generosity.  Details are coming together and are posted at www.swansongs.org/events.

"David made some new friends..."

A note from Christine:

I've been waking up early all week - jet lag converging with a full moon and now obsessively watching the coverage of Sandy.  It's hard to fathom the magnitude and impact of that storm.  Sending prayers of safety to everyone back east.
As we return from our awesome Alpine Adventure we are jumping in to the many projects that have been awaiting our attention.
The upcoming Swan Songs fundraiser will be a primary focus for me in the weeks to come.  Eliza Gilkyson is the perfect artist to help bring awareness to our work and mission; tickets are selling fast - especially the guaranteed seating - so if you think you'd like to attend, I urge you to get online now and reserve your seats.  And it's not too late to become a sponsor or donate to the silent auction.  The Austin Chronicle and KUT are on board to help us spread the word - thank you to both of them!  You can email me for more information at christine@swansongs.org.
I know I say this every year, but I can't believe the holidays and end of the year are upon us.  I still haven't completed some of my accounting/filing tasks that I meant to do in January!
I also can't believe we didn't get any new music recorded...at least not ours, although our studio was very busy.  I have been writing some, so I can see a new record on the horizon.  We just have to figure out how to fit it in to the calendar, which I am determined to do.
For now, I'll go tackle the business to-do list, and play with our new kitty, Yoda.
     Love, Christine

  And a blurb from Chris:

I posted "there's no place like home" three times in a row on Facebook, and sure enough, the ruby slippers appeared and I was back in south Austin with a big glass of ice water.  That's the one thing I miss on the overseas trips...well that and a juicy hamburger.  (I had both immediately at the Atlanta airport after clearing customs).
The trip was a blast, it was exciting to see some new wonders and to see it all through the eyes of our Adventure friends, most of whom had never been to Europe.  We gave them an insider's view, thanks to our guide Martin Meier, who has made it one of his gifts to this world to bring Austin music to his home village of Laufen, Switzerland.
Always the shutterbug, I took well over a thousand pictures (do a thousand pictures say a single word?) and I'll be posting a 'photo tour' on the website very soon, but probably not today.  Today I will get back to work on studio projects, this newsletter, a Halloween show at Guero's in Austin, and generally getting my life back in order after being gone for 2 weeks and combating the resulting jet lag, which keeps me on the couch for hours on end for a couple days.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the folks out East that have been pounded by the superstorm.  The saddest image I saw on the news was a big roller coaster that is now part of the Atlantic ocean.
     See you at the gig.
     Chris
