Albert and Gage e-Newsletter September 2009
Hey and howdy, friends and fans. We've had our share of joy
and sorrow this last month. We've helped lay our good friend Becky Biard
to rest and grieved the loss of local troubadour Nigel Russell, all the while
watching
"Dakota Lullaby" be embraced by radio near and far. Tom
Peterson's songs are resonating with listeners like we hoped they would and the
homemade music video we posted has been viewed over 1860 times. Watch it
here on YouTube.
It's a beautiful glimpse into the South Dakota world that Chris comes from.
September shows include Historic Gruene Hall, Donn's Depot, the
lovely outdoor deck at Central Market (Austin...bring the kids), the new Red
Dragon in Baton Rouge and a benefit for musician's health insurance (HAAM) at
Threadgills in Austin. Chris plays a few cool shows with
Jerry Jeff Walker and mixes up a storm
at our MoonHouse Studio for Jody Mills and
Lesli Wood. Christine continues her work for
Swan Songs and other causes while
booking our shows and singing like an angel.
Hey, it's starting to cool off a little, come out and see us!
We'll keep trying to get as close as we can.
C and C.

A note
from Christine:
"Dakota Lullaby" has been a very meaningful project
for us; I think you all get that. This month it took on
another dimension when we sang that song at the memorial service for
our dear friend, Becky Biard (partner of MoonHouse artist, Michael
Austin). She loved the song and it was the perfect tribute to
her - a woman who was proud of her heritage and the land she and her
ancestors came from (Paris, Texas and the Red River valley). She
had some Native American blood and a pioneer's spirit. The
song felt custom made for that moment.
Swan Songs,
the non-profit that I cofounded, has been busy lately. Jimmy
LaFave is scheduled to make a woman's musical last wish come true by
singing for her at her bedside; we brought Scottish songs and
bagpipe music to another home; this week I am planning a concert for
a gentleman who wants to hear songs about moons, blackbirds and
rivers - I love that request.
In the last several months we have experienced quite a
bit of loss. I am a bit raw from it all, but it has made me
even more committed to Swan Songs. Contributing to making
someone's last time here more meaningful and poignant is as
gratifying as anything I have ever done.
This month we have some private shows, some favorite venues to
return to, some Jerry Jeff gigs for Chris and MY BIRTHDAY!
Love, Christine |

And
a blurb from Chris:
I spent a week in the studio with the legendary
Jerry Jeff Walker this month, playing guitar, piano, accordion and
lap steel. The stories are rich, the jokes are bawdy, and the
atmosphere is delightful.
Red Willow Band had several
opportunities to open shows for JJW across the midwest in the 70's,
and he's probably one reason I ended up in Austin, Texas.
(Click
here
to see the poster from one of those concerts). His band was
loose, but very spirited and embraced us as compadres (as opposed to
the cold shoulder an opening act will sometimes get from the
headliners). Bob Livingston and
Gary P. Nunn were in the band and
told us stories of Austin and the Gonzo lifestyle they were leading
with Jerry Jeff.
I've since gotten to be friends with the whole band,
(Gary P. Nunn recorded a Red Willow song on his first solo album and
Bob sits in at Donn's occasionally)
and am now getting to know Jerry Jeff in a whole new way. The
crazy outlaw is still there, but we're all more interested in a
grilled cheese and a good movie after the show than a case of beer
and a loud crowd. In that respect I joined his band at just
the right time.
A lovely side note; on the last day of recording he
invited Christine to the studio to record a duet version of Susanna
Clark's great tune "I'll Be Your San Antone Rose". We'll let
you know when it's going to be released.
Chris
P.S. Bye, Becky. Love you, mean it..... |
